Shifting Gears Automotive Technician Training Program
The availability of qualified, trained automotive technicians continues to be critically important for General Motors and its dealerships. The Shifting Gears: Automotive Technician Training Program can help Soldiers transition from the U.S. Armed Forces into successful careers as General Motors service technicians.
Overview:
- Shifting Gears launched August 2014.
- General Motors specific service technician training is provided on-base at Fort Cavazos in Killeen, TX.
- During the 12-week program, students have the opportunity to achieve up to 70% Service Training Standards (STS).
- Curriculum has a strong focus on Electrical/Electrical Systems, Strategy Based Diagnostics, Engine Repair, Engine Performance, and Brakes.
- Students can graduate with 1 Bronze, 7 Silver, and 4 Gold STS Certificates (upon successful completion of ASE Certification tests).
- Soldiers participate in the training prior to their separation date so that they leave the Army trained and ready to work in a General Motors dealership as an entry-level technician.
Attention GM Dealers: Shifting Gears consists of 12 weeks of classroom, online, and hands-on technical training that provides eligible Soldiers transitioning out of the Army with the necessary skills to become service technicians at GM dealerships. At this time, the program is only offered at Fort Cavazos in Killeen, TX.
A Shifting Gears Engagement Specialist is available to help GM dealers find and hire program graduates. The Engagement Specialist will market the Shifting Gears program to transitioning Soldiers, help prepare students for their civilian job search, and connect graduates with hiring dealerships.
